Article: Which material is best for a garden shed?

Which material is best for a garden shed?

Which material is best for a garden shed?

Adding an outdoor shed to your garden is a great way to add extra storage space and stay organised. However, it can be tricky to decide on the type of material you want your new shed to be constructed from.

The three most commonly used materials used for sheds are resin, wood, and metal. Here are the pro's and con's of each material-type to help make your decision.

Resin Sheds

Created to be a more versatile, affordable, and sustainable shed material, resin combines most of the benefits of wood and metal while addressing the large disadvantages of each material. Resin sheds are more environmentally friendly when compared to wood, and Keter takes that one step further by using 100% recyclable materials.

Resin-based outdoor sheds are growing in popularity because of their versatility and ease of use.

Pro's of resin / plastic sheds:

  • low maintenance and easy to clean
  • rust, insect and rot-resistant
  • easy to assemble

Con's of resin / plastic sheds:

  • should be anchored to a foundation for maximum stability (in high-wind locations)
  • limited weight-bearing capacity on walls

Wooden Sheds

The original outdoor storage shed or 'wendy house' - wooden sheds create a rustic look that is still loved by many.

Pro's of wooden sheds:

  • easy to customise (design / layout)
  • visually appealing for homeowners who prefer a more classic / rustic look

Con's of wooden sheds:

  • not insect, fire or weather-resistant
  • high maintenance
  • prone to rot

Metal Sheds

A popular alternative to wooden sheds, metal sheds are created using galvanised steel or aluminium - however there are very limited designs that tend to look the same and metal sheds often fall short on added-features.

Pro's of metal sheds:

  • low maintenance
  • durable
  • fire, insect and rot-resistant

Con's of metal sheds:

  • always need a foundation / base anchoring
  • not resistant to rust

So, which shed material is the best?

While all three materials are durable and will get the job done, metal and resin are better alternatives for weather-resistant sheds that can handle harsh conditions with minimal maintenance.

Wood and resin sheds are the best if you place high value about the visual appearance of the shed.

Resin / plastic sheds are the best option if you are looking for a shed that can incorporate all the benefits of wood and metal as well as being a sustainable option, and you won’t have to worry about fade, rust, rot, warping, or maintenance.
